How "future proof" is the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F gaming motherboard?

Comments

The ASUS ROG Strix B550-F gaming motherboard ticks a lot of boxes in terms of specification, with support for Intel’s 7th and 8th generation processors, up to 32GB of RAM, 6x SATA ports and 3x PCIe slots giving you plenty of room to expand your system into the future. But how future proof is it really? Let’s take a look at what this motherboard has to offer, and where its limitations lie...

The ASUS Republic of Gamers

Like all Republic of Gamers motherboards, it comes with great features. For example, Asus's Audio Core 3D chip delivers high quality audio for your games, and LN2 mode ensures that your processor stays stable when cooled below -200°C (you know who you are). Beyond these obvious advantages, many might question how future proof the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Motherboard really is. Well, let's have a look! First off, it comes with an 8 layer PCB and a glass fabric PCB coating. This allows for higher quality component placements.

Overview of the Asus ROG Strix B550-F Motherboard

The ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming Motherboard is part of Asus’ new affordable lineup of motherboards. The main focus with these motherboards was an increased build quality, a better software user interface, and an improved audio experience. Does it manage to be future proof for consumers that are looking for a cheap motherboard or does it fall short in terms of longevity? Let’s take a look at what we found out after testing it for about two weeks.

Processor Support, Memory Support, and Expansion Slots

The Asus Rog Strix B 550-f Gaming has support for 6th and 7th Generation Intel Core Processors. It also comes with a total of 4 DIMM slots for up to 64GB DDR4 memory, as well as support for AMD Crossfire and Nvidia SLI Technology. This means you'll be able to pair it with both modern Intel and AMD processors, plus get plenty of headroom if you plan on upgrading to more powerful graphics cards down the line. And although it doesn't have enough room for a MicroATX sized graphics card by itself, you can easily add a bracket that will fit it in if you need to.

Audio, Networking, USB Ports, and Display Ports

If you’re looking to pick up a new PC, you may have noticed that not all computer ports are created equal. In fact, some connections only work with specific devices. To keep yourself future-proof, go for a PC with lots of ports to connect your devices and peripherals. For example, if you’re planning on buying or already own a 4K monitor, having a graphics card with HDMI and DisplayPort out will ensure that your monitor works well as new monitors are released in coming years—at least so long as you don’t have any outdated equipment. As for audio connectors, it can be quite frustrating (and sometimes impossible) to find an analog port in today's world of digital media consumption and broadcasting.

The Best Gaming Motherboards to Buy in 2018 Under $200 – $300

The world of PC components moves fast and not everyone can afford to jump on each new release. It’s important to keep in mind that you don’t have to buy a $500+ mainstream gaming board if you’re simply looking for an upgrade or want to build a mid-range PC. There are plenty of affordable options that deliver awesome performance without breaking your budget! After all, every cent counts in a build where every dollar spent counts! If you have around $200 – $300 to spend on a new motherboard, we recommend checking out one of these: MSI H310M Pro VH Plus, Gigabyte GA-AB350M Gaming 3, MSI B360M Mortar.
